FOCUS SESSIONS #2 - Data changes everything: Smart(er) infrastructure rules our world

You’ve heard it before: cities represent 2% of the earth’s surface, but are responsible for 60%+ of CO2 emissions. And global population will increase by 2.5 BILLION PEOPLE (!!) in the next 25 years. Little more needs to be said to accelerate a complete rethinking of how cities should operate – it is either this or... well, or no future for cities at all.

So the race for smarter infrastructures is booming as it should. Lowering its carbon footprint is on top of every public administration agenda, with the added challenge of becoming resource-efficient and providing better services to citizens. While we all run against the clock, we’re still figuring out how to address the most critical spots of an improved infrastructure system: energy production and storage, transformation of current transport, a higher waste and water efficiency...

Bright Cities

A reference in Smart Cities, the Brazilian startup Bright Cities is an online platform capable of making cities of any size or nationality smarter. With the slogan “Upgrade your city”, its proposal is to guarantee a gradual evolution of cities, offering the necessary tools to improve its services, the public management and the quality of life of citizens.

Developed during more than five years by researchers and data scientists from UNICAMP, the platform uses an exclusive and innovative analysis methodology to develop diagnostics and roadmaps of urban solutions, technologies and good practices. With this information in hand, public managers are able to develop more assertive and effective strategic plans, in addition to evaluating and monitoring the performance of public policies and designing projects to solve the main challenges. Cities of different scales and profiles have adopted the Bright Cities platform, from Riyadh, capital and financial center of Saudi Arabia, with more than 7 million inhabitants, through Brazilian metropolises such as Aracaju (SE) and Campinas (SP). In partnership with the American organization Leading Cities, launched the Leading Cities U. S. Smart Cities Rating System, a tool that evaluated the 500 largest cities in the United States. For managers who have already used the service, the platform was able to provide a deep understanding of the municipality and to bring examples of good practices from other cities in the world: “It is a technology that brings together important data, opens up possibilities for going further and presents concrete solutions so that we can increasingly think outside the box", says Edvaldo Nogueira, mayor of Aracaju (SE).
