Crowdsourcing app aims to make cities safer for young people

financial times app Safetipin

Safetipin, an app that maps safe and unsafe areas, is helping build a safer environment for women in urban areas in India. The app was developed in response to the 2012 rape and murder of Jyoti Singh in New Delhi, and allows users to input data on street lighting, CCTV, pavement quality, and perceived safety scores onto a map.

It then offers safer routes and notifies users of the nearest safe spot in an unsafe area. Co-founder Kalpana Viswanath, an expert on gender and urban safety, believes that the key to overcoming the dangers women face in cities is to crowdsource data and identify problems to take to local governments to fix.
